Key Events In The History Of Guruvayur Temple

The guruvayur temple is considered as the one of the most important pilgrimage hindu temple which is located in kerala. the primary deity of the temple is lord krishna in his childhood form.

The history of the Guruvayur temple is intertwined with the sacred idol of lord Krishna which is worshipped by lord Mahavishnu, Brahma, and later lord Krishna in Dwaraka. When lord Krishna returned from the earthly life the place Dwaraka was submerged in the sea.

At this time lord Krishna instructed his devotee Uddhava to take care of the sacred idol. Uddhava retrieved the idol from the sea with the help of the guru and vayu. Then they re-installed the idol in malayaddri, present guruvayur.

Later onwards the devotees started worshipping this sacred idol and the place gained more importance during the medieval period. Later onwards the temple faced many invasions and adversities but the devotees overcame everything and protected the temple from destruction.

During the 17th century the zamorins, rulers of Malabar came into existence and they played a key role in the development of the temple. During the time of Tipu Sultan, he tried to destroy the temple with fire but the devotees transferred the sacred idol to Ambalapuzha.

After his drive, they again reinstalled the idol in Guruvayur. It is also mentioned in the records that the land marked a devastating fire in 1970 which caused more destruction for the temple.

The collective efforts of the devotees and the other authorities helped the reconstruction of the Guruvayur temple. Then gradually it developed as the most significant pilgrim site in south India.
