The guruvayur is the one of the most prominent hindu temples in kerala and it is famous for its splendid architecturala marvelous. The temple is mainly dedicated to the lord krishna in his childhood form which symbolises the innoscence and divinity.
The temple is constructed in a pure kerala traditional style temple design and it symbolises the spirituality and functionality. The temple have the sanctum sanctorum where the supreme deity in worshipped.
The sanctum sanctorum is constructed in square shape along with a conical roofing. The walls of the sanctorum is filled with carvings that depicts the scenes of hindu epic.
The sanctum sanctorum is surrounded with a naalambalam .
it is a rectangular structure around the sreekovil with a distinct distance between each other for the devotees to perform pradhakshina around the deity. The main attraction of the temple is its gopuram which is the entrance.
The temple has mainly two gopurams in the east and west. Then gopuram is adorned with carvings and murals that depict the mythical stories and scenes of Hindu epics. The temple also has a unique structure called koothambalam.
It is a separate hall where traditional art forms such as kooth, and kathakali are performed. There is a sacred pond which is known as Rudratheertham is present near the temple.
It is believed that this pond has purifying properties and devotees used to take ritual baths before entering the temple.
The temple is fully covered with an outer structure called chuttambalam and also a dhwajasthambham (flagstaff) in front of the sreekovil and it represents the sanctity of the temple.
