The prominent devotees of lord Guruvayurappan

The guruvayur temple is one of the most prominent and revered hindu temple in kerala which is dedicated to the lord krishna.

The lord Krishna is worshipped here in his childhood form known as guruvayoorappan. The temple has a deep traditional as well as religious culture and it made the temple more popular among the devotees.

There are many legends behind the Guruvayur temple. Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri and Poonthanam are strong devotees of Guruvayurappan. Poonthanam was a quiet poor person and he wrote the “jnanappana” which is dedicated to the Guruvayurappan and he gave it to melpathur for reviewing.

He refused to do it and told him to learn the “vibhakthi” first.  The Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri was a Vedic scholar and he wrote the famous “Narayaneeyam” in front of the deity.

After finishing the writing he tried to recite the narayaneeyam but suddenly couldn’t open his mouth. One small boy appeared in front of him and the boy started reading the narayaneeyam and started finding mistakes and later he disappeared.

Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri realized his mistakes and he met Poonthanam and corrected his jnanappana.
There is another legend related to the Manjula aal. There is one big banyan tree at the east entrance of the Guruvayur temple.

Based on the legend there was one girl named Manjula and she was a strong devotee of lord Krishna she used to put floral garlands to the lord Krishna.

One day Manjula came late to the temple and it was already closing time so the priests were not ready to accept her garlands and became sad due to the priest's behavior. She went to the east entrance and sat there.

At this time poonthanam came this way and he asked about the reason behind her sorrow. Her words touched his heart so Poonthanam advised her to put the garland under the banyan tree and he told her that the lord accepted her garlands.

The next day morning the priests opened the sreekovil and they found a different garland which they hadn’t kept yesterday. Poonthanam identified that the garland was the same as the garland bought by Manjula. Later poonthanam explained all the incidents to everyone and from that time the banyan tree was called Manjula aal.
