The Architecture of Guruvayur Temple : Blend of Tradition And Devotion
The architectural style of Kerala is unique with its grandeur and pride. The guruvayur temple is an ancient Hindu temple that follows the traditional Kerala temple-style architecture.
The traditional Kerala temple style architecture is based on the reference of Kshetra Purana and Shilpa sastras. The temple is constructed by using local materials such as stone, clay tiles, and timbres.
The Kerala temple structure has mainly two parts Sreekovil and the nalambalam. The sreekovil or the sanctum sanctorum is the main portion of the temple where the supreme deity is installed.
The sreekovil is built in a square structure with conical roofing. Intricate carvings are done on the walls of the sanctum sanctorum which depicts the stories of deities and the scenes of the epic.
The inner courtyard is referred to as the nalambalam which is in a rectangular structure and there is a gap between the nalambalam and the sreekovil for the devotees to walk while praying.
Unlike other temples the guruvayur temple have a unique part called koothambalam. It is a large hall where the traditional artforms are performed. It plays a key role in protecting the traditional art forms culture of kerala.
There is one vilakkkumatam which is lamp post structure with lots of lamps is placed infront of the sreekovil. The entire lamps will lit during festivals and it brings more sprirituality and ambience to this place
