The History Of Guruvayur Temple

The guruvayur temple is one of the most revered and ancient Hindu temples which is located in the Thrissur district of Kerala.

The temple is mainly dedicated to the lord Krishna and worshipped in the form bala Krishna known as guruvayoorappan and it is believed that the idol was before worshipped in the Dwaraka.

History Of Guruvayur Temple

According to Hindu mythology, the temple is consecrated by the guru, Brihaspati (teacher of the gods), and the vayu ( wind god).

Based on the historical references, it is believed that the temple was established during the time of the 14th century and the zamorins of Calicut (rulers of Malabar region) played a key role in the development and maintenance of the Guruvayur temple.

In 1716, during the time of the Dutch invasion, the temple faced a critical situation when the Dutch people tried to destroy the temple with fire.

But the idol of lord Krishna was preserved from all the enemies and the temple was reconstructed in 1747.

In 1789, King Tipu Sultan who was the son of Haider Ali tried to destroy the Hindu community as a part of growing their Islamic religion.

As the people of Guruvayur wanted to protect the Guruvayur temple, they took the idol of lord Krishna and the idol of the processional deity and it was hidden in a place named Ambalapuzha.

Later the Tipu Sultan set the Guruvayur temple on fire and it caused damages to the temple.

Soon after his drive the people of Guruvayur again reinstalled the two idols in the temple and they restored the temple’s glory with the help of the Guruvayur devasawom board.
